Tustan

Tustan is a historical and cultural preserve — a rock complex that from the 4th to the 16th century was home to a medieval cliffside fortress-town and customs post. Traces of the ancient fortress have been discovered and preserved on the rock formations. Today, Tustan is a popular tourist destination: a museum, a place for rest, festivals, and other events. The preserve, its infrastructure, and the surrounding territory are continuously developing, with new archaeological research and discoveries ongoing. Tustan and its surroundings are also a unique landscape environment set amid the Carpathian Mountains.

This landscape is the central focus of our work on the project. The process is a living one — it is created, developed, and updated alongside the ongoing development of Tustan’s territory and infrastructure. The material below is presented in the chronological order in which ideas, design work, and implementation unfolded. Our guiding principles on this project are maximum preservation and integration with the existing natural environment, and alignment with the overall development vision for the complex, developed by our colleagues.
